Elias and Asha Mattu
Mayor and Mayoress City of Wolverhampton 2017/18
Councillor Elias Mattu is the 159th Mayor of Wolverhampton, and was elected on 17 May 2017 for the 2017-18 municipal year.
He was educated at Graiseley School, Wulfrun College and Wednesbury College of Commerce and Technology. He studied law at Wolverhampton University whist working as a volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau. He also studied for a certificate in Management and a Diploma in Leadership and Management at Warwick University.
The Mayoress, Asha Mattu was educated at to degree level where she achieved BA Honours in Special Needs and Inclusive Practice.
The Mayor, Elias Mattu was born in Punjab, North India and came to live in Wolverhampton at the age of 9 and has lived here since. The Mayoress, Asha Mattu was born and raised in Coventry and recently worked in Graiseley Primary School. They have been married for almost 30 years.
Elias has had an eventful and long career. He has been a Councillor for Graiseley Ward for 17 years. He has held several positions on the council, including Chair of the Scrutiny Panel, Licensing Committee, Member Champion for Equalities and a Cabinet Member holding different portfolios.
He has also held significant roles on outside bodies representing the council, including West Midlands Integrated Transport Authority, West Midlands Police and Crime Panel, West Midlands Equality and Diversity Board, west Midlands LGA, Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) and its Central Regions Vice-Chairman.
Furthermore, he has served as a Vice-Chair of the St Chad’s Association and Graiseley School Governing Body for 22 years, including 12 years as the Chairman of the Governing Body.
Elias has a great passion for sports. Over the years, he has participated in many different sports, including hockey, cricket, boxing, martial arts and power lifting. He became a regional power-lifting coach and referee and in the late 1980s opened his own club where he trained 5 British Power-lifting Champions and 1 European Champion.
